Here are the steps that should activate Scientific WorkPlace, Scientific Word, or Scientific Notebook Version 6 with a home use serial number.  These instructions also apply to fixed license files and network client license files.


NOTE:  The instructions below use 'SWP' for Scientific WorkPlace.  If you are using a different product, substitute 'SW' for Scientific Word or 'SNB' for Scientific Notebook.


License types

Home use licenses

When you register using a home use serial number, your name and email address (entered in the activation dialog) are sent to your license administrator along with the license file information.  The license administrator will forward the license information to you after it is validated.  A typical license information is:

Your product serial number is included below.  Protect your serial number.  
If you lose it you may not be able to use the program.

The license information is between the ****'s.  Save this to a file named license.lic.  The .lic file extension is important.  If you have difficulty creating this file, consult your system administrator.  Store the license.lic file as indicated below.


Fixed licenses

Most licenses are fixed licenses.  Use Help, Activate to create the license file and have it automatically stored in the profile for the current user.  The main difference between the home use license and the fixed license is that the home use license is time limited to one year and the fixed license does not expire unless the computer ID somehow changes. 


Network client licenses

A network client license is used in conjunction with a network license server.  The network administrator typically installs the network client license.  It will be of the form:

Where to save license.lic

The location of the license file is the same for all license types, home use, fixed, and network client.


Windows


With SWP closed,

1. Place license.lic in the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\MacKichan\SWP\ for 64-bit versions of Windows, or C:\Program Files\MacKichan\SWP\ for 32-bit versions of Windows.


2. Start SWP and select Help | License Information. You should see verification that your software is activated.


We have had some reports where the activation doesn't seem to take.  This could be if a trial license had been used previously.  Sometimes licensing work for a short time but then fails.  In these cases, deleting the user profile and restarting the program seems to solve the problem. 


3. Locate the profile directory. The profile directory can be different for different versions of Windows and can be different for local vs. network login. It can typically be located by using the path: %appdata%\SWP\.  With SWP closed, delete the entire SWP directory and all subdirectories.  See Locating the profile directory for SWP, SW, or SNB when using Windows or OS X for additional details in locating the profile directory.



OS X


With SWP closed,

1. Place license.lic inside the application in the Resources folder.  The complete path to this folder is /Applications/MacKichan/SWP.app/Contents/Resources/.  In Finder you can use Go | Go to Folder and enter the path.  You can also right click or Ctrl+click and then use Show Package Contents from the menu to move inside the app and then to the Contents and Resources folders.


2. Start SWP and select Help | License Information. You should see verification that your software is activated.
